PCNAF Recruiting Teachers for New Partnership Program
The Peace Corps Nigeria Alumni Foundation (PCNAF) has launched a new initiative, the PCNAF Secondary School Partnership Program. It was created in an effort to help students here in the U.S. learn about a major crisis in Africa and other parts of the developing world: the persistent problem of the tens of millions of children who grow up without receiving the most basic education. And the vast majority of those children are girls. PCNAF is currently recruiting teachers who want to integrate information about this crisis into their curriculum to participate in the new initiative and support its scholarship program for Nigerian girls.
Schools that participate in the Partnership Program will become part of a growing movement within the international community to narrow the gender gap in primary and secondary education in developing countries, and enhance public awareness of the importance of girls' education. PCNAF will assist teachers in developing curriculum to inform their students about: 1) the need for universal basic education; 2) disparities in girls' education in Nigeria and other developing countries; 3) the economic and social benefits of educating girls; and 4) ways in which students can play a critical role in helping to eliminate disparities in girls' education. In addition to engaging in fundraising activities to support the scholarship program, students will also have an opportunity to correspond with the Nigerian girls who receive financial assistance to complete their secondary school education through PCNAF's scholarship program.
Teachers who wish to participate in PCNAF's Secondary School Partnership Program should e-mail Albert Hannans at ahannans@cox.net, or phone him at (703) 924-1474. For more information about PCNAF, please visit www.pcnaf.org.
